                       MY AMBITION IN LIFE

The word 'ambition' means an ardent desire for gaining a distinction in competition with others. In that sense I must confess that I have no ambition. I do not want to beat others. I want only to excel myself by some fixity of purpose in life and so I should have an aim in life, as we know an aimless man is like a 'ship without a rudder'. However, my aim in life is to make myself a ‘man' in its true sense. Now we know that the ever-increasing misery and distress is due to the appalling poverty and ignorance of the people of our country. So in order to do any good to them, the root of all their sufferings must be rooted out at first. My aim in life, therefore, is to do, as much as possible in my humble power, to spread education among the masses. Having finished my formal education, I shall open an NGO with some young workers in my native village for rural uplift. However, my aim in life may not be too high from the traditional angle of vision, but I like to pursue it leaving the consequences to God. Some say that money is the honey of life. But I do not agree with them. Rather, I think that morality is the real honey of life.

       CHILD LABOUR

The term 'Child Labour' means the system of engaging children in professional manual labour. Undoubtedly, it is a global problem. But in India it has assumed an alarming dimension. In many families, the children are forced to do work as bread-earners. As a result, there are many drop-outs in schools every year. In tea-stalls, domestic homes, cottage and small-scale industries and in mines and agriculture they are employed as unrecognised labourers and get utter negligence and exploitation. This cruel practice kills their human qualities and in many cases turns them into anti-social in their future life. For the solution of this problem, we need not only strict laws but also a thorough economic reform to reduce the poverty line. The "Sarba Siksha Aviyan" is a bold step taken by the Government. At the same time, the spread of literacy and social consciousness is essential to wipe out this shameful custom.

Sarba Siksha Aviyan- (Education for All Movement), or (Sarba Siksha Aviyan) SSA, is an Indian Government programme aimed at the universalisation of elementary education "in a time bound manner", as mandated by the 86th Amendment to the Constitution of India making free and compulsory education to all the children between the ages of 6 to 14 [ estimated to be 205 million children in 2001 ] a fundamental right. The programme was pioneered by former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in2001.

WAR

There was a war between France and England. During this war, an English soldier was taken prisoner by the French. He was kept in a dark prison where he led a very miserable life. When the war ended the soldier was set free. He came back home. One day he went to the London market. There he found a man selling a cageful of birds. He was reminded of his wretched prison life in France. He had pity on the birds. He bought all the birds and set them free.

Moral: One who suffers can feel for the sufferings of others.

To
The Editor,

        Sub -Multi-storeyed Building Collapses

 Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I venture to voice my views to enter a protest against the way the multi-storeyed buildings collapse so frequently in the city.
The memory of the notorious Pradip Kundalia, the promoter of the multi-storeyed building which collapsed a few years ago at Bhawanipur, has not yet been faded and then the Sibalik. It was the fourth tragedy in the last six years. The Sibalik, which was built only a years ago at the Sarat Bose Road, collapsed like a castle of playing cards when some of the residents were sleeping their last sleep at about 3.45 a.m. Of course, the police, the fire brigade and the local volunteers rescued some injured persons from the debris but this should not be our consolation. It is now an open secret that the low-quality building materials, faulty plans and the corporation-promoter alliance are at the bottom of every such tragic happening. Some committees would be framed by the Government to look into the matter and all would perhaps be hushed up in course of time.

Now, on behalf of the citizens, I fervently request you to publish an editorial note on the subject to draw the attention of the public and rouse the conscience of the Kolkata Corporation and the Government.
                      Thanking You
                                                     Yours faithfully,
