              STUDENTS AND POLITICS

There is no doubt about the need of political knowledge of students in a democratic country like India. But the question arises whether they should have active participation in it or not. And at this point, we see different opinions both for and against it. However, the primary duty of a student is to study and prepare himself for his future life. Political activities are bound to be a bar to their studies. The present indiscipline and unrest among students are largely due to their active participation in politics. In fact, active politics is a dirty game of money and muscle. As partisan politics generates more heat than light, students should take an unbiased point of view. Students, however, should not remain ignorant of politics. They should know how the governments of different countries function and how their own country is governed. They should have knowledge of the socio-political condition of the country. But, by no means, they should become the pawns on the political chess-board.

           SCIENCE AND SUPERSTITION

Science is an instrument by which man can find truth by the quality of experiments and the power of reasoning. On the other hand, superstition is a blind faith. In fact, there is an inherent contradiction between science and superstition. Bruno, Galileo and Copernicus stood against superstition for promoting science even at the cost of their lives. But superstition has not totally lost its force till today. For example, we see that ignorant people treat the epidemic of cholera or pox as the 'blessing' of the goddess Sitala. The so-called civilized and elite persons also have some superstitions such as their notion about the odd number of 13, a black cat at night etc. Thus ignorance and weakness of character are, as a whole, the cause, and superstition is the effect. And so to eradicate the evil effect, we must direct our attack against the cause from which it springs. If we treat superstition as a disease, science should be regarded as the right medicine to cure it. Of course, here science means not only the bookish knowledge of science but the scientific spirit in its truest sense.

                   KAZI NAZRUL ISLAM

My favourite author (poet) is Kazi Nazrul Islam. He was born in May 1899. He was the child of Kazi Fakir Ahmed and Jaheda Khatun. He had very little school education and had to face a very hard life when he was in adolescence. Genius in him began to manifest from this time. He was once arrested by the British Police for anti-government writing. As a composer of music, he had an outstanding genius and the number of songs he wrote is about three thousand. However, in 1942 Nazrul was affected with a neurological problem in his brain. He lost his speech and, to a great extent, his senses. He was taken to Dhaka(Dacca) and breathed his last there on the 29th August in 1976. If we evaluate his poems
today, we can see that emotional outburst and undaunted spirit are the essential features of his writings. But what keeps him marked in our hearts is his liberal outlook in respect of communal harmony and his enthusiasm for the unity of Hindus and Muslims in our country.

          IMPORTANCE OF BOOK READING

Books are our never-failing friends. Moreover, a book is a storehouse of knowledge. Those who can read books are lucky indeed. Money cannot buy peace of mind. Power cannot heal our sorrows. Books can, when all others fail. From this point of view, a book is our best friend. Moreover, a book can work as the windows to the world outside. The book on travelling can take us into different corners of the world. And all the while we can relax in bed or on an armchair. In fact, a book can put us in the time machine. It can take us an ancient world or can open the visions of the future. Through books, we can contact the great minds of the past and the present. Thus books can broaden our mind and gladden our hear. We see into the secrets of life and universe in the books on science, religion and literature. We love books for all these reasons. But there are numerous books. We do not have enough time and energy to read all these books. As a result, we need a choice of books. We know good books ennoble our minds, while bad books pollute it. Our time is precious; we cannot waste it by reading trash. So we should read those books which may be our best companion which can enlarge our vision and make our life more meaningful.
